Shawnee Mission Park is located off Renner Road between Midland and 87th Street. This is a huge park, 1,655 acres to exact, it has so many fun things to do. This park features a 120 acre lake that has swimming, fishing, and even an off leash dog park with access to the lake area.
As for sports, this park has a disc golf course, archery range, and a large lake. The lake is used for fishing, sailing, and paddle boarding. They even have a place to rent kayaks, pedal boats, paddle boards, and canoes during season. They also have a boat cleaning station.
No matter what your interest is, there are many things to do in this park with the Model Rocket Site, RC Flying Field, RC Boat Lakes, that are not in your traditional park. There are many trails in this park for hiking, but there are also ones for biking, and to ride your horse. You can even rent bikes if you don’t have your own. I love that there are places to check your bike before you go out on the path. They even have opened a jump track for bikes.
One popular area at this park is also the off leash dog park that is 44 acres. This area gets quite crowded on weekends, but also has an area where the dogs can play on the dog beach with access to the lake.
What Else is There?
There is more than one playground at Shawnee Mission Park. One of the smaller playgrounds is tucked in right after the dam. It has a nice shelter overlooking the water with restrooms at the front part of the parking lot. There are musical instruments, multiple slides, climbing structures with ropes and platforms to one of the slides, then stairs to the other slide. It also has a zigzag climbing structure connecting them.
Another playground is like a pirate ship that a few other Shawnee playgrounds have. It features, stairs, ladders, tunnels, slides, and a bridge.
The newest playground at Shawnee Mission Park is an inclusive playground. It is fenced in and has restrooms available right there. There is a spider net climbing feature and a hammock right when you enter this playground. Then go down the hill, either by path or slide, and they have a sidewalk and climbing net to get back up. There are maze games, musical instruments, swings with safety harnesses for any kid, a circle swing, and bubble structures. There is an also a chalkboard, roller pull through fun, a sea saw, and a spiny top thing. The playground for littler kids here has a tunnel on the ground, small stairs to the slide, a bridge, and triangle swirl. The biggest downside to this playground is they cut down trees to make room for it so there is no shade.
