You will find Field Station Dinosaurs just south of Wichita in Derby, Kansas. It is located on about ten acres. You will see it as you are driving up you can’t miss those dinos. I wasn’t sure what to expect showing up at this park. It’s like the minors for Animal Kingdom.
After purchasing your tickets, you will get a paleontologist booklet to get stamps as you complete each activity. At the end you can be a super paleontologist. They tell you if you actively try to get passes you have get more outside of field station.
There are 40 life size moving animatronic dinosaurs on several paths thru the park. Enjoy Dig Deeper where they tell you more about a certain dinosaur. There is a t-rex feeding frenzy show – this is a live musical show great for younger to preschool ages. There is also a raptor maze, paleo playground, scavenger hunt, fossil dig, eye spy, and mini golf. It was almost 100* so we didn’t do all the shows. Although, they did try to have shade and umbrellas around the park.
The show we caught was the T-Rex Feeding Frenzy…umm, this was not at all what I was expecting. First off, it’s a musical, with songs that teach learning facts about what t-rex eat all those times ago. Then you get to meet a “real” t-rex Dino. This was interesting as you could still see the human legs so it looked like it had four legs.
The paleo playground is bounce houses with a large inflatable style slide. There is also an area that is supposed to be like an observation deck to look out over the jungle. There is also a fossil dig site where kids can uncover dinosaur bones.
The buried treasures is in an air conditioned building this has salt from the Hutchinson Salt Mine. There is also other rocks, fossils, and artifacts. Enjoy walking the four main trails as you watch and see all the dinos. Dinos looks neat, but some of them you can see haven’t stood up to the weathering of Kansas. Some are missing chunks, but all looked like they were working.
Mini Golf at Field Station
One thing I will note is that mini golf isn’t really among the dinosaurs like I originally thought. It is actually at the front of the park. It has a blue river, large rock, and the feel of Jurassic Park. There are a few Dino bones along the course but that is about it.
Overall, if you just plain love dinos, if you have younger kids, or have the sunflower summer pass, check this out. Also, don’t forget on the Sunflower Summer pass is the Derby Waterpark, which is a lot of fun. The kids enjoyed the water after the hot game of mini golf before the drive home.
